Massachusetts Boaters Born After Jan. 1, 1989: Here’s the New License Rule You Need to Know
Hey, friends! Quick heads-up if you’re planning to take your boat out this season: Massachusetts has a new rule for anyone born after January 1, 1989. You’ll need a boating safety certificate to run a motorized boat legally. Don’t worry, it’s not a big hassle, but it’s important to know before you hit the water. And yes, if any of your kids were born after this date, they need to take it too!
Who Needs It?
If you or your kids’ birthday is after Jan. 1, 1989, and you want to operate a powerboat, jet ski, or any motorized recreational boat in MA, this applies to you.
April 1, 2026 Start
- If you were born after January 1, 1989, you must complete the course by April 1, 2026, with no penalties assessed until September 1, 2026.
- If you were born on or before January 1, 1989, you’ll have until April 1, 2028, to complete the course.
How to Get Your Boating Safety Certificate
Step 1: Take an approved course.
You’ll need to complete a state-approved boating safety course. There are a few ways to do it:
-
Online courses: Flexible and self-paced, usually taking 6–8 hours total. Some interactive programs let you finish faster if you’re quick.
-
In-person courses: Typically 10–12 hours, often split into multiple sessions. These are taught by certified instructors and give hands-on guidance.
You can find a course on the Massachusetts Environmental Police website or through approved providers like iLearnToBoat and other state-certified programs.
Step 2: Pass the exam: After the course, there’s a short exam to make sure you know the rules, navigation basics, and safety protocols.
Step 3: Keep your certificate on board: Once you pass, you’ll get your official boating safety certificate -make sure it’s with you anytime you operate a motorized vessel.
What the Course Covers
The course will teach you everything you need to operate your boat safely, including:
-
Massachusetts boating laws and regulations
-
Basic navigation rules and “rules of the road” on water
-
Safety equipment requirements and life jacket use
-
Emergency procedures and accident prevention
-
How to operate different types of motorized vessels safely
It’s designed to give you confidence and safety knowledge, whether you’re piloting a jet ski, a powerboat, or a family pontoon.
Boating in Massachusetts is incredible, but safety comes first. Taking a little time to get certified means fewer accidents, more fun on the water, peace of mind for you and your crew (including your kids), and staying on the right side of the law.
